Drawn from the Nahuatl word “tzapotl,” Sapote is an encompassing term for a soft, edible fruit. It is incorporated into the common names of several fruit-bearing plants and trees native to Mexico, Central American and northern parts of South America, and is also known in Caribbean English as “soapapple.”
